Anthony Davis earned his first NBA championship title on Sunday, after the Los Angeles Lakers finished game 6 of the finals with a score of 106–93 over the Miami Heat.

Throughout his first seven seasons in the league, Davis played in the All-Star game six times and won All-Star MVP once. Though clearly talented, his effort was never enough to lead his team, the New Orleans Pelicans, past the second round of the playoffs. At the beginning of last season, Davis’s agent publicly asked for the player to be traded. The deal between the Lakers and Pelicans was finalized in June of 2019. Anthony Davis was sent to Los Angeles in exchange for Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart and additional first-round draft picks. Davis’s trade has clearly paid off, only taking one season to secure the championship ring he was aiming for.

Following Lebron James’ 28-point game, Davis closed the finals with 19 points. This confirmed his 25 point average for the last post-season round. The 2020 NBA season was not the first time James and Davis experienced playing together. In 2012, the duo competed on the United States’ Olympic team. The team, also consisting of Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, and Carmelo Anthony, ended the eight game tournament with zero losses to win the gold metal. From this experience, James wanted to continue this relationship and was a champion for Davis while he was being traded. When asked about their relationship, Davis said, “When I first got here, he told me that he wants to give me my first ring, and I told him, I want to get him back to the Finals.” The pair achieved this goal in game 6 of the 2020 Finals.
